blue double oval handstamp (Clarke 555) on incoming folded letter datelined "Monrovia, Liberia, West Africa, Jan 25th 1845", written by Francis A. Harris, who emigrated to Liberia around 1840, and addressed to Benjamin Coates, a Quaker businessman who worked to help black Americans relocate to Africa, letter originally enclosed a power of attorney, very fine and historically significant
