manuscript postmark with matching "5" rate on 1846 folded letter to Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, very fine, Fort Wilkins was established in 1844 and named for Secretary of War William Wilkins, in 1846 all but a single caretaker were sent to serve in the Mexican-American War
manuscript postmark on embossed ladies cover to Omena, Michigan, matching "3" rate, small faults, still fine and attractive cover from the year after this office opened
circular datestamp on large-sized cover franked with 1861 30c Orange (71) with grid cancel, addressed to New York City, very fine and scarce domestic use of the 30c stamp to pay 10-times the first class rate
