horizontal strip of three, positions 65-67R8, early strong impression in rich shade showing "mottling" in Franklin's hair, black circular grids and "Philadelphia Pa Feb 8" datestamp on 1858 cover to Columbia, Pennsylvania, extremely fine and choice
vertical pair (positions 11/21L9) and horizontal strip of seven (positions 94-100L9), used on triple-rate cover from Washington, DC to Exeter, New Hampshire, stamps and cover small faults, still a fine and impressive use
wonderful collection mounted on homemade pages, begins with trial color proof in violet on wove (40TC5), continues with 37 used singles, a used pair and strip of three, and 14 covers, all plated and with illustrations or descriptions of notable features (many plated by Mark Friedman), we note many different recuts, double transfers, flaws, and other noteworthy varieties, better items including Type II with red cancel (scissor-cut perforations) and Type IV on cover, mostly fine to very fine, an exceptional collection which warrants a close look from the specialist in this issue
tied by black "Paid" in grid to illustrated advertising cover for "Holden, Cutter & Co., Importers of Fancy Goods and Toys...Extensive Dealers in Fire Works, of all descriptions" with a beautiful design of a Fourth of July fireworks celebration, red Boston datestamp, reverse with large illustration of ship offloading toys at a warehouse, very fine and choice, a rare early fireworks advertising cover
neatly mounted on homemade pages, includes approximately 85 used singles, a block of four, and 25 covers, very nearly all with plating information (many plated by Rob Lund), better items including two patriotic covers, Type I on cover, and Type II on cover (scissor-cut perforations), huge array of double transfers and other plate varieties noted, generally fine to very fine, a wonderful opportunity for the 3c specialist
used pair with 1858 town cancel, scissor-cut perforations at top right, otherwise fine and fresh, 1981 Philatelic Foundation certificate (Scott $400)
horizontal pair with red and black town cancellations, few short perforations, otherwise very fine (Scott $435)
used pair with red town cancel, very fine and attractive (Scott $127.5)
used horizontal pair with black grid cancels, few short/blunted perforations, fine appearance (Scott $700)
excellent color, very fine, 2022 PSAG certificate (Scott $1,000)
original gray card backing from Roosevelt album, bold color, very fine and pretty, 2022 PSAG certificate incorrectly states 65P2 (Scott $250)
approximately 2,100 stamps primarily arranged by cancellation type, mostly ungrilled but a few grilled stamps interspersed, note multiplies including strips and blocks up to eight, pre-printing folds, double perforation varieties, colored cancellations (including green, orange, ultramarine, violet, etc), fancy cancellations such as anchors, stars, shields, and letters/numbers, "Paid" handstamps, and much more, the vast majority of cancellations fall into the target and grid families but a close inspection will undoubtedly find many Skinner-Eno listed designs, some mixed condition but most cancellations fine to very fine or better, simply an extraordinary collection which would take ages to duplicate, for the student of 1860s cancellations this lot is an ideal research project in the making, view scans to appreciate
