datestamp with red straightline "Ship" and "7" handstamps on folded letter from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil to Salem, Massachusetts, endorsed "P Swan", very fine and historically significant, a detailed and interesting letter discussing the battle for Uruguay's independence, handwritten prices current (including rosewood, coffee, copper, and candles made from sperm whale fat), and a list of steamers leaving for the United States, we note: "We have much pleasure in being at length enabled to advise you of the final settlement of our long pending difficulties. On the 8th, Inst. General Oribe entered into arrangements with Gov. Urquiza, surrendering to him all his cannon, military stores, &c. All the Oriental forces are to be incorporated with the army of this Province, and the Argentine Troops are placed at the disposition of Genl. Urquiza."
