"Erivan" Collection Part IX and Canal Zone Stamps and Covers
Our June sales include Part IX of the "Erivan" Collection of United and Confederate States Postal History and a catalogue of Canal Zone stamps and covers featuring the collections of James W. Crumpacker and Paul F. Ammons.
mint left margin imprint block of four (positions 41-42, 51-52), upper left stamp the variety, very fine and choice, the spaced "AL" variety occurs only in position 41 of Stage I, 699 were issued (Scott $110)
mint horizontal pair (positions 86-87) with right stamp the variety, small hinge remnants, very fine and scarce, only eight examples recorded in Canal Zone Stamps, this variety is not constant and occurred toward the end of the printing of the 1c with Stage I, 1992 Philatelic Foundation certificate (Scott $300)
complete mint pane of 100 with stage II overprint (10.B), most stamps never hinged but a couple of gum creases and hinge reinforcements, very fine, a scarce and attractive pane
never hinged single (position 29), bright and fresh color and balanced margins, extremely fine, a wonderful example of this error of which only about 240 are believed to have been issued, 1989 Philatelic Foundation certificate (Scott $225)
mint single, fresh and very fine, the error appears in position 68 of some sheets of Stage I, this is the only instance in all Canal Zone overprints that a letter was printed at a 90° angle, 920 examples of the error were destroyed upon discovery leaving only 21 mint and 4 used examples today, 1992 Philatelic Foundation certificate (Scott $2,000)

mint block of nine (positions 76-78, 86-88, 96-98), center stamp the variety, five stamps never hinged including the variety, very fine and fresh, the dropped "On" occurs in position 83 but only in the first few sheets printed as the mistake was quickly noticed and corrected, only 10 examples recorded, 1992 Philatelic Foundation certificate (Scott $400)
never hinged horizontal pair, very fine and scarce, just 90 examples of this variety issued
complete mint pane of 100 with dark carmine overprint (11.B), includes varieties such as "Zone" in antique type at position 48 (11a), "Panawa" at right at positions 24 and 29 (11.1), left "Panama" 16mm long at positions 25 and 30 (11.2), "N" with double diagonal stroke in left "Panama" at positions 23 and 28 (11.3), "P A" spaced in right "Panama" at positions 15 and 20 (11.4b), and "Panamas" 1½mm below bar at positions 91-100, couple of hinge reinforcements but majority of stamps never hinged, very fine and rare as a complete sheet
mint block of four (positions 37-38, 47-48) with bottom right stamp the variety, very fine and fresh example of this scarce error (Scott $175 as single)
used single with partial datestamp, very fine and choice, this variety occurs only in position 48 (Scott $175)
mint single, fresh and fine, a rare error, it is known that 200 were issued but only 35 copies are recorded, 2005 Philatelic Foundation certificate (Scott $600)
