horizontal pair cut to shape at left and right, manuscript "T" control mark and "C" cancel on each, on August 27, 1844 folded letter from Conway, Massachusetts to Hartford, Connecticut, perfect strike of red "Forwarded by Hale & Co. from Northampton" oval (Type F32), manuscript "2" local delivery charge, very fine and rare, the only Hale cover from Conway (15 miles north of Northampton), ex-Gutman
red oval handstamp (Type F19) and matching boxed "Collect Six Cents for Hale & Co." (Type C4) on September 1844 folded letter to Lowell, Massachusetts, red "Forwarded by Hale & Co. 95 Merrimac St. Lowell" oval (Type F21) applied upon arrival, very fine and attractive, ex-Gutman
full to large margins with portion of adjoining stamp at left, manuscript "X" cancel, on folded letter datelined "Hartford, Con., Sept. 3, 1844", endorsed "Hale's mail paid", light soiling along file folds, very fine, covers from Hartford with Hale's adhesives are rare and Gutman records this as the only 5c Red originating from Hartford, ex-Gutman
red oval (Type F19) on folded letter to Boston dated September 11, 1844, manuscript "Paid", very fine, predates the earliest recorded use of the Hartford "Forwarded" oval by six days
red boxed handstamp (Type C6) with manuscript "18¾" and "6" rates on November 5, 1844 folded letter from Liverpool, England to Hartford via New York City, carried via Queen of the West, very fine, a rare Hale cover servicing forwarded transatlantic mail, the 6c represents the ship fee and 18¾ triple inland postage, the absence of postal markings suggests this cover was carried into the United States outside of the regular mails, illustrated in Gutman (page 330), ex-Hall, Puliafito, and Gutman
red oval (Type F19) on folded lettersheet to Springfield, Massachusetts dated December 1, 1844, endorsed "by Livingston & Co. Express" who carried the letter from Philadelphia to New York City where it entered the Hale's system, small faults but still fine and interesting conjunctive use
red oval handstamp on large part folded letter to Boston dated December 23, 1844, additional black boxed "Collect Six Cents for Hale & Co.", separated along filefolds, very fine appearance, ex-Fay
position 10 (from pane of 12) with manuscript "South" precancel and "Dec 31" cancel, on 1844 folded letter to New York City, endorsed "Hale's Express dec.31 Paid." beneath the stamp, very fine, many Hartford Mail Route covers to New York were carried by Hale's, 2008 Philatelic Foundation certificate (Scott $11,000)
red oval (Type F19) and matching boxed "Collect Six Cents for Hale & Co." (Type C7) on February 26, 1845 folded letter to Cabbotville, Massachusetts, very fine, this boxed "Collect" handstamp is unique to Hartford and this is the earliest recorded use
manuscript notation on April 21, 1845 folded letter to New York City, also endorsed "Will Mr. Johnson please forward this at once", very fine, one of three reported Phillips & Co. covers, Phillips & Co. was founded by Daniel Phillips, Jr. of Hartford as a package express in 1844 and carried a small volume of mail until the postal monopoly in 1845, the company worked in conjunction with other expresses including Adams' Express and Beecher's Express of New Haven until its acquisition by Adams' in 1848
