manuscript postmark with matching "2.16" rate (2dwt, 16gr) alongside on folded letter to Colonel Samuel Ward in East Greenwich, Connecticut, light toning along filefolds, very fine Continental Congress Post letter, Samuel Ward, Jr. participated in Benedict Arnold's attack on Quebec and later saw action at the Battles of Red Bank and Rhode Island, in 1781 he retired and later served as a delegate to the Hartford Convention in 1814
red first day of issue datestamp on cover with 1851 3c Orange brown, Type I (10, position 1R1E), margins clear to grazing at left, tied by black grid, addressed to Uxbridge, Massachusetts, small corner stain lightly cleaned, very fine and choice, a gem first day cover of the 1851 3c issue, Wilson Hulme recorded 43 July 1 covers for this issue, of the four from Hartford this is the only example with the stamp tied, ex-Simpson, Shaughnessy, Baker, and Wagshal, 1978 Philatelic Foundation certificate

double circle datestamp ties 1861 1c Blue (63) to locally-addressed cover, originally franked with 1857 1c Blue, Type V (24) and two-line "Held for Postage" applied, September 30, 1861 backstamp (the date originally posted) confirms this as an attempted demonetized usage, light wear, very fine, a spectacular cover demonstrating the transition from pre-Civil War stamps to the new 1861 issue
