red datestamp with matching arced "Ship" (Clarke 511) and manuscript "27" rate on folded letter from Bordeaux, France dated August 24, 1808, three-page letter discusses risks of shipping due to the British Fleet, very fine, 27c postage pays double the 12½c rate plus 2c ship letter fee, sent during the Embargo period but arrived after the Non-Intercourse Act
