It began service in the European theater in July 1870, was named flagship of European Station beginning in September and served in this capacity until February of 1872 when she sailed for Africa and then the Caribbean. During its service in Europe, two of her sailors plus a marine earned Congressional Medals of Honor. The addressee, John Haines, served as Plymouth's Chief Petty Officer on its European service during the Franco-Prussian War.
