Brattleboro, Vermont, "Devil With Pitchfork," bold strike ties 1868 3c Rose C Grill (83) to an envelope addressed to NY City, accompanying 26 Nov cds, stamp some short perfs but Very Fine in every respect; much rarer than its West Meriden counterpart (S-E PH-F 41)rnThe addressee, Gen George Cullum (1809-92), was a soldier, engineer, and writer. Cullum served as a general in the Union Army during the Civil War, primarily in the Western Theater, and served as the 16th Superintendent at West Point.
